For the past few months I have been a loyal fan of the Maybelline Colossal Kajal. It does what it claims to do. Stays on for hours and hours (6 hours, they claim) and is smudge free. There have been times when I have slept with it on and I have woken up with perfectly kohled eyes. It does not glide on very smoothly though as it is very matte and not very soft, but that doesnt bother me much.

Now talking about the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal. Is it better than the Maybelline Colossal? Yes. It is softer and glossier. Goes on much smoother. I do not, however, see much difference in terms of darkness. Eyeconic is only slightly more black.

Here is a comparison:

Feature Maybelline Colossal Kajal Lakme Eyeconic Kajal
Smudge free Yes Yes
Long lasting Yes(the company claims 6 hours) Yes(the company claims 10 hours)
Intense color Yes Yes
Waterproof Yes Yes
Texture Matte Smoother and creamier than Colossal
Price Rs. 150 (I heard it is going to be increased to 175) Rs. 199
Availability Easy Very difficult! It is out of stock everywhere.

For that last reason, I am sticking to Colossal. I like both, so it’s not a problem. If any of you find the Lakme one anywhere, ping me! I am almost running out of the one I have.

The only con about the two products is that they can be difficult to remove. Cleanser or baby oil works for me.

Tip: Always powder your eyelids and under eye area before the application of kajal to make it last longer and to avoid raccoon eyes, especially if you sweat a lot and have oily eyelids.

Here are some pictures:

Swatch:

Left: Maybelline. Right: Lakme. Honestly I cannot tell the difference except for texture.

Bare eyes. No makeup except face powder:

With Maybelline Colossal Kajal:

With Lakme Eyeconic:

A comparison:

Left: Maybelline. Right: Lakme.

Both are amazing kajals. Choose whichever and you should be happy.

Until next time, happy dressing up!

Fantastic! Thank you for this! I am stocked up on Colossal kajal but I will make it a point to get my hands on Lakme’s Eyeconic. Seems interesting.

Question – If I dab a bit of powder on the under eyes, will it still be easy to apply the kajal? Stupid question but I’m very new to all this!

Yes. In fact applying the kajal will be easier as you won’t have any oil/sweat around your eyes. And the kajal will not smudge! 🙂 Just a teeny tiny bit of face powder though. Loose powder or compact.

Hello! I personally do not like the Maybelline Collosal Kajal because it is a bit abrasive on the eye. Lakme’s Eyeconic Kajal is much better but there are serious availability issues (as we have both discovered- HUL’s distribution system needs to spruce up!)- Instead I would recommend the German brand VOV which is the best roll on Kajal stick I have come across- been using it for years and you know how much Kajal I use! It is easy on the pocket too (Think it is for sub 100 last I checked), and much smoother to apply. Do try!

Try Mac Teddy Kohl. It’s a gorgeous brown! Faces, Chambor and L’oreal also have brown kohl and eyeliners.

If I have taken the effort to click so many pics, I will of course click two comparison photos too, Those are not the same but taken at the same angle. We are not associated with any brand so we do not con. We are just regular people blogging about things we like.

Neha ji•• eyeconic is actually not so black as colossal! If u apply it very hardly and with time then only eyeconic will show some black colour. But only in one line colossal has a black colour… there are. a lot of eyeconics in U.S …. so colossal is best and eyeconic is good to but its not smugde free too!

Colossal is better Neha ji! Its really smudge free but eyconic is not! Eyeconic gets erased in one wash.. colossal has a better black than eyeconic! If u apply colossal lazily it wont work! I have experienced that it takes 5 minutes to have a dark black but colossal takes 1-2 minutes! So colossal is better and eyeconic is not shining but colossal is!!!! Eyeconic is not bad but still its not better than colossal!

Thanks for this one Neha. I usually go for a local unbranded kajal stick to give a fine outline to my lower lid and a StreetWear black liquid eye liner for my upper lid. I was thinking I should take a break from both and go for a collosal kajal (for both upper n lower lids) instead. Your post was helpful.
Can u also write a post on different styles in which one can wear the colossal kajal? That would be helpful n appreciated!
    Thanks.

Hey Hi ya like meenakshi said even i am facing the same problem with eyeconic.the 1st initially stick that i bought was very smooth and dark. But the other 2 that i brought seemed very hard.I have to make sum 6-7 strokes 2 get the kajal on.Infact the lotus kajals one stroke is darker than the 6-7strokes made by eyeconic …

A very useful post indeed! Thank you very much! I use Maybelline but I have an issue with the ‘black’. I do not think It’s the darkest shade so perhaps I’ll give Lakme a try if am able to lay my hands on It that is 🙂

Both sound amazing but I eventually bought the Maybelline Kajal only because it is a more known/international brand (as opposed to Lakme which I’ve only heard about when I go on holiday to India…) I haven’t actually researched the brands individually so I am aware of the fact that I may be incorrect. Nonetheless, I cannot wait to try out the Maybelline Kajal!
