Kajal Wars – Maybelline Colossal Kajal vs Lakmé Eyeconic Kajal; Swatch and review

For the past few months I have been a loyal fan of the Maybelline Colossal Kajal. It does what it claims to do. Stays on for hours and hours (6 hours, they claim) and is smudge free. There have been times when I have slept with it on and I have woken up with perfectly kohled eyes. It does not glide on very smoothly though as it is very matte and not very soft, but that doesnt bother me much.

Now talking about the Lakme Eyeconic Kajal. Is it better than the Maybelline Colossal? Yes. It is softer and glossier. Goes on much smoother. I do not, however, see much difference in terms of darkness. Eyeconic is only slightly more black.

Here is a comparison:

Feature Maybelline Colossal Kajal Lakme Eyeconic Kajal
Smudge free Yes Yes
Long lasting Yes(the company claims 6 hours) Yes(the company claims 10 hours)
Intense color Yes Yes
Waterproof Yes Yes
Texture Matte Smoother and creamier than Colossal
Price Rs. 150 (I heard it is going to be increased to 175) Rs. 199
Availability Easy Very difficult! It is out of stock everywhere.

For that last reason, I am sticking to Colossal. I like both, so it’s not a problem. If any of you find the Lakme one anywhere, ping me! I am almost running out of the one I have.

The only con about the two products is that they can be difficult to remove. Cleanser or baby oil works for me.

Tip: Always powder your eyelids and under eye area before the application of kajal to make it last longer and to avoid raccoon eyes, especially if you sweat a lot and have oily eyelids.

Here are some pictures:

Left: Maybelline. Right: Lakme. Honestly I cannot tell the difference except for texture.

Bare eyes. No makeup except face powder:

With Maybelline Colossal Kajal:

With Lakme Eyeconic:

A comparison:

Left: Maybelline. Right: Lakme.

Both are amazing kajals. Choose whichever and you should be happy.

Until next time, happy dressing up!

Fantastic! Thank you for this! I am stocked up on Colossal kajal but I will make it a point to get my hands on Lakme’s Eyeconic. Seems interesting.

Question – If I dab a bit of powder on the under eyes, will it still be easy to apply the kajal? Stupid question but I’m very new to all this!

  2. Karishma says:

Hello! I personally do not like the Maybelline Collosal Kajal because it is a bit abrasive on the eye. Lakme’s Eyeconic Kajal is much better but there are serious availability issues (as we have both discovered- HUL’s distribution system needs to spruce up!)- Instead I would recommend the German brand VOV which is the best roll on Kajal stick I have come across- been using it for years and you know how much Kajal I use! It is easy on the pocket too (Think it is for sub 100 last I checked), and much smoother to apply. Do try!

Very well written. And I really appreciate the effort you have put in.
By the way, have you tried Amway Attitude? I bought one this feb. and I am really so much in love with that one that rest of my kajals are waiting for their turn to be applied 😛

Hi Neha, nice post as always!

For those looking for Lakme’s Eyeconic Kajal can order it on flipkart and get it delivered in 3-4 working days 🙂

Hey u conned ! Those comparison photos are same! Those are not two photo’s. U just took one picture with one of the kajal and posted it twice to make it appear as if there is no difference between them !

    • Neha Kapoor says:

Thanks for the comment. Sad that you feel that way.
If I have taken the effort to click so many pics, I will of course click two comparison photos too, Those are not the same but taken at the same angle. We are not associated with any brand so we do not con. We are just regular people blogging about things we like.

wow extremely helpful post and you have covered all the points You made it easier for me to choose I will go for Lakeme actually I am not a make up lover but I used to apply kajal sometimes rarely though and it’s been years since I applied kajal wanted to buy a good one my sister in law told me to go for lakme but it’s not available anywhere so wanted to read it’s reviews before I buy it then I read maybeline colosal and lakme eyeconic now I know I will buy only Lakme eyeconic thank you so m7uch for your help

  7. Kady says:

Neha ji•• eyeconic is actually not so black as colossal! If u apply it very hardly and with time then only eyeconic will show some black colour. But only in one line colossal has a black colour… there are. a lot of eyeconics in U.S …. so colossal is best and eyeconic is good to but its not smugde free too!

  8. Kady says:

Colossal is better Neha ji! Its really smudge free but eyconic is not! Eyeconic gets erased in one wash.. colossal has a better black than eyeconic! If u apply colossal lazily it wont work! I have experienced that it takes 5 minutes to have a dark black but colossal takes 1-2 minutes! So colossal is better and eyeconic is not shining but colossal is!!!! Eyeconic is not bad but still its not better than colossal!

  9. Radha says:

Thanks for this one Neha. I usually go for a local unbranded kajal stick to give a fine outline to my lower lid and a StreetWear black liquid eye liner for my upper lid. I was thinking I should take a break from both and go for a collosal kajal (for both upper n lower lids) instead. Your post was helpful.
Can u also write a post on different styles in which one can wear the colossal kajal? That would be helpful n appreciated!

  10. meenakshi says:

i neeed to make 10 swipes to make it look like an eye liner..is it really so or i dnt know its usage exactly??? m very disappointed after buying it nvr buy it again in my life 😦

    • Mayuri says:

Hey Hi ya like meenakshi said even i am facing the same problem with eyeconic.the 1st initially stick that i bought was very smooth and dark. But the other 2 that i brought seemed very hard.I have to make sum 6-7 strokes 2 get the kajal on.Infact the lotus kajals one stroke is darker than the 6-7strokes made by eyeconic …

  11. Dipti says:

New to the blog…….useful information. can anyone help me with the correct method of applying a kajal. I have tried both colossal and eyeconic. for me it hasnt lasted more than 2 hrs. the kajal wears down and i end up looking like a ghost

  12. Simar deep kaur says:

Its really nyc post. Bt if we apply lakme kajal and sleep. Next day does it be the same? And 1 more question lakme is the best then collasal or nt.

  13. Khushboo says:

Thanks Neha, for the very well written review. It has become most easiest to decide which one to buy, after reading your post. 🙂

  14. Shalini says:

A very useful post indeed! Thank you very much! I use Maybelline but I have an issue with the ‘black’. I do not think It’s the darkest shade so perhaps I’ll give Lakme a try if am able to lay my hands on It that is 🙂

  15. Bhavika says:

Both sound amazing but I eventually bought the Maybelline Kajal only because it is a more known/international brand (as opposed to Lakme which I’ve only heard about when I go on holiday to India…) I haven’t actually researched the brands individually so I am aware of the fact that I may be incorrect. Nonetheless, I cannot wait to try out the Maybelline Kajal!

  16. Keerthana Devanand says:

That’s exactly wht i was luking for……i was confused as to what to buy -colossal or eyeconic and u just solved the problem for me…..i guess i’d go with eyeconic 🙂
but i feel the best kajal i have ever used is lakme absolute kohl…its just amazing!! but also way too expensive 😦 …nevertheless thnx a ton….keep up the good posting 😉
