The Year of the Glow – Highlighting, Strobing and Healthy Skin

highlighting and strobing

Undoubtedly, 2016 has been the year of the glow. While the past few years saw a surplus of looks with matte skin and heavily chiselled features, 2016 has been all about healthy looking skin that (seemingly) glows from within. Of course, either you glow from within, or there’s always makeup!

Highlighting has ruled the roost so far when it comes to makeup trends, and it tends to accompany contouring. You contour first and as an additional step you highlight the tops of your cheekbones, the brow bone, bridge of your nose and the cupid’s bow. In strobing, you just do all the highlighter steps, without the contouring. The idea is: strategic placement of light illuminating product.

To begin with, it is a good idea to get a good base because any illuminating product has a tendency to make skin blemishes look even more prominent. An illuminating foundation like L’Oreal True Match Lumi not only gives good coverage but is a first step towards the glow.

This particular year the market has been flooded with highlighters, illuminating creams, strobe creams, shimmer palettes and what not. BECCA’s Shimmering Skin Perfector has almost become an iconic product. It is the stuff of legends now. Other popular ones are highlighters by Kevyn Aucoin, Anastasia Bevery Hills, Benefit, Hourglass, Too Faced and quite a few more!

Depending on your skin type, it is possible to find one which will suit your needs be it a cream highlight or powder or liquid.

While makeup is magical, beautiful and oh-so-much fun, let’s not forget that great skin is the best foundation for glowy looks, and highlighters show up even better on healthy skin. Drinking lots of water, eating green leafy vegetables and taking an Omega 3 supplement (with your doctor’s consultation of course) can go a long way in creating skin that glows from within.

Go on. Shine bright like a diamond!

What are the chances .. I am not a very fashion trends person and just today morning was reading about how glitter is making a comeback on international runways and here you are on point with your ‘this is in’ advice!

You are actually the first fashion blogger I am reading.. used to follow High Heel and PinkVilla but this is definitely more personalised and very practical .. so this is almost like ‘comfort reading’ ..

    Good going girl!

I had to look up the word strobing … so it is highlighting. The first word that comes to my mind is Kardashians but I guess Kim is more famous for contouring. I have never tried this but since it doesn’t involve those comples contour tactics I might actually try it. Would be great if you could post a tutorial too.

Strobing is nothing but highlighting without contouring 🙂

Loved your style of writing! All those products you mentioned sound fantastic! I am going to give the L’oreal product a try. I love the lume-look. So can you give a step by step instruction on which product to apply and the technique too? I am interested in a tutorial for sure! Glad the alexa campaign introduced me to your lovely blog!

Hey had never even heard of half the brands you have mentioned. While I love makeup, I haven’t explored much and was really looking to know how the dewy look is achieved. A tutorial would be perfect..please do one :)!
