Makeup is something which most of us use daily. Be it the kajal to ward off the evil eye or a whole smokey eyes look for a party.
Today I am going to explain the names of a few makeup basics and how/why we use them!
- Foundation/BB cream.
Foundation is a skin coloured cosmetic applied to the face to create an even, uniform colour to the complexion, to cover flaws and sometimes, to change the natural skintone.

Sephora ”Perfecting Cover” foundation | Rimmel ”Wake Me Up” foundation | Sephora Mineral Compact foundation | Sephora Professional Foundation Brush #47.
- BB (beauty balm) can be compared to a tinted moisturizer, most BB creams contain SPF (sun protection factor). BB creams provide lesser coverage than foundations.
- Concealer.
Concealers conceal blemishes, dark circles and spots. The best way to bring on concealer is patting it on gently with the ring finger. This is the weakest finger on your hand, that’s why it has the most gentle touch. Say hello to nature’s best makeup tool! - Blush.
Also called rouge, is a red/pink/peachy coloured talcum-based powder applied on the cheeks to provide more of a youthful appearance and to emphasize the cheekbones. Also helps to bring back the colour on your cheeks after you’ve evened out all colour by using foundation.
- Bronzer.
A bronzer adds a tan colour to the skin without sunbathing. A bronzer shouldn’t be confused with a tanning lotion as bronzers can be washed off immediately. Also, don’t buy your bronzer in a shade which is too dark. One shade darker is the best to provide the perfect glow. Bronzers are also used for contouring. Contouring means making your face look thinner. - Lipgloss/Lipstick.
Lip gloss is a product used primarily to give lips a glossy lustre (often with a subtle colour). It makes your lips look a tad fuller. Lipstick is product containing pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients that applies deep color, texture, and protection to the lips. Lipstick have different finishes such as sheer, matte, glossy, satin/creamy or liquid.

- Eyeshadow.
Eyeshadows are coloured powders to create dimension on the eyes and add colour to the face. You can use shadows as a liner right about the lash line or many other purposes which can make your eyes pop. One color swept across the lid is a great basic look.
- Eyeliner.
Eyeliner is used to enhance the eyes and make them look bigger. If you prefer a very natural look and want your eyes to look brighter and bigger, put a very thin line of eyeliner to directly to your lash line, preferably the underside of the upper lashes (tightlining).

Rimmel ”Exaggerate” eyeliner, Yves Rocher Eyeliner #51 ”Blauw”, Colorbar ”Precision Waterproof” Eyeliner, MAC Liquid Liner, Teeez ”Easy On The Eyes” Eye Liner.
- Mascara.
Mascara is a cosmetic commonly used to enhance the eyes. It may darken, thicken, lengthen, curl, volumize and/or define the eyelashes. Given the right mascara, it makes your eyes look brighter and bigger.
Do you remember your first makeup product? Is there anything missing in this list? Feel free to tell us in the comments!
Loads of lovee, Manisha
Nice! Had a suggestion on reading this. You guys should do a piece on how to use a bronzer well like you’ll had done a piece on the red lips! Not many people are certain how to use and how many ways can a bronzer be used.
